“Brain regions do not perform functions…”

“…..Specific circuits that happen to be in areas we can identify using criteria, anatomical or chemical, with no functional meaning, give rise to functions.

The same neurons can perform different functions by virtue of being synaptic participants in different circuits.  And the relevant circuits do not begin and end in the amygdala.  They connect the amygdala with other regions. So I don’t study the amygdala per se. I work on the amygdala only to the extent that some of its subregions have cells and synapses that are part of a circuit that is involved in threat conditioning. ”  Joe LeDoux
